About the area


Brest district is located in the southwest of the Brest region, is a border region, bordering Poland and Ukraine. The total length of the borders is 387 km, of which 140 km are with Poland, 37 km are with Ukraine. The length of the region from north to south is 100 km, from west to east – 35 km. 

The area of ​​the district is 1617 sq. km. Most of the region (about 85%) is located within the boundaries of Brest Polesie, a small northern part is on the Bug Plain. Altitudes are usually 130-150 m above sea level. The highest point is 186 m above sea level (near the village of Zapolye, Motykalsky village council), the lowest point is 123 m (at the confluence of the Motykalsky Canal with the Western Bug River). The surface of the area is mainly lowland. The Western Bug River flows through the territory of the Buge region with its tributaries Mukhavets, Lesnaya, Kamenka and others. The area has uniquely beautiful corners of nature - Beloe, Rogoznyanskoye, Selyakhovskoye and Mednyanskoye lakes, which are very popular among tourists and vacationers in the summer. 

The region is famous for its sanatoriums and recreation centers: “White Lake”, “Berestye”. Forests occupy 34.9% of the district's territory. The largest forests are Telminsky, Mukhavetsky, Beloozerovo. Pine forests occupy 72.8%, black alder 10.6%, birch 10.4%, oak 3.7%. Swamps occupy 1.7 thousand hectares. 23.2 thousand hectares have been reclaimed. The soils are soddy-podzolic, soddy-podzolic swampy, floodplain (alluvial), soddy and soddy-carbonate swampy. Mineral resources include peat, clay, construction sand, and chalk. There are sources of sodium chloride and sodium chloride bromine mineral waters. 

On the territory of the district there are: the republican landscape reserve "Pribuzhskoe Polesie" (7950 hectares), two reserves of local significance: "Bugsky" (7567 hectares), "Brestsky" (65 hectares), 3 natural monuments of republican significance ("island" spruce forests, spruce common (snake-shaped) and purple forest beech), 4 natural monuments of local significance (common ivy, forest beech, bird cherry and pyramidal oak). There are 685 species of higher vascular plants, including: woody forms - 25 species, shrubs - 32 species. There are 42 plant species in the Red Book of Belarus, incl. majestic celandine (the only locality known in Eastern Europe), common centipede, floating salvinia, European bathwort, basil foliage, mountain St. John's wort, blueberry willow, Sarmatian censer, meadow sage, soft scurd, curly lily, bear's onion, Siberian iris; 49 species of animals, incl. Pond and Natterer's bats, European broadleaf, common hamster, grey-cheeked grebe, great and little bitterns, black stork, greylag goose, white-eyed duck, black kite, white-tailed eagle, lesser spotted eagle, kestrel, crested newt, reed toad, marsh turtle, copperhead . Game animals include elk, wild boar, roe deer, fox, brown hare, marten, raccoon dog, migratory goose, drake, woodcock, hazel grouse. 

The M1/E30 highway runs through the area - part of the trans-European transport corridor No. 2 Berlin - Warsaw - Minsk - Moscow - Nizhny Novgorod. This is the shortest route for delivering goods from Western Europe to Russia and Asian countries. The Brest-Baranovichi, Brest-Linynets, Brest-Bialystok (Poland), Brest-Kovel (Ukraine) railways also pass through; The area is connected by roads to Baranovichi, Pinsk, Kamenets, Malorita. 

The length of railways is 145 km, republican roads are 175.147 km, local roads are 480.990 km. On the territory of the district there are 11 village councils (Znamensky, Kleynikovsky, Domachevsky, Lyshchitsky, Motykalsky, Mukhovetsky, Radvanichsky, Tomashovsky, Telminsky, Chernavchitsky, Cherninsky), 142 settlements, home to about 40 thousand people. Representatives of 37 nationalities and nationalities live here. The main population is Belarusians (83%), Ukrainians (6.9%), Russians (8.1%), Poles (0.9%) and others also live. On the territory of the district there are 2 checkpoints across the State border of the Republic of Belarus: Domachevo- Slovatichi, Tomashovka-Pulemets; simplified checkpoint “Dubok”; 6 border outposts, 43 settlements are located in the border zone. There is an international airport and the free economic zone of the Brest FEZ.
